The Dish:

While I was unfamiliar with Crab Rangoon for far too long, it is now a celebrated dish in my book. At Osha Thai, the exterior wonton is crispy and not sweet itself, but is very receptive to the sweetness in the accompanying dipping sauce. The center of each tasty piece is soft and warm and proves the oft-purported idea that pretty much everything is better with cream cheese. Served hot (eat 'em that way, don't wait), this appetizer is rich enough for dessert but still savory enough to be on the appetizer list.

Key Ingredients: Crispy wonton, Dungeness crab meat, cream cheese, water chestnut, onion, carrot; served with plum (sweet and sour) dipping sauce

The Place:

Osha has seven (yes, seven!) locations throughout the city to prove their worth, each bustling at lunch and dinner. The décor at each restaurant is slightly different but basically reflects the theme of "Thai-classy" with tasteful and expensive-looking Thai-themed wall hangings complementing modern chairs, finishes, and fixtures. The Third Street location in SOMA has floor to ceiling windows and plays mood music that you might expect in a fancy modern boutique. The Embarcadero location is sprawling, open, and the tables along one side have long couches for seats.

Alcoholic Accoutrements

Do not let it slip past you that Osha (all seven, apparently) has a fabulous bar. With signature cocktails (Green Tea Mojito, Melodious Margarita), a wide selection of unique Martinis (Lychee, Ginger Zinger), sake, shooters, an enthusiastic wine list, and generous happy hours (see each location), Osha is also a great place to enjoy a drink after work or on the weekend.
