The Dish:

Who can resist a crispy, juicy piece of fried chicken? It's a dish that can easily be ruined by a flavorless crust or dry meat. Fortunately, there's no chance of that happening at Wayfare Tavern. Their version boasts meat that's always succulent and a thin crust that's crispy and flavorful. The secret is in the buttermilk brine, which tenderizes the meat, ensures juiciness, and adds a bit of tang. Add roasted garlic and fried herbs and you've got a combination that's unexpected and extraordinary.

Key Ingredients: Organic chicken, buttermilk brine, roasted garlic, crisp woody herbs, lemon

The Place:

The décor here is very masculine and classic old-world San Francisco with its black interior, dark woods, and brushed metal accents. However, the classy interior doesn't translate to arrogant service; the staff is personable and surprisingly accommodating.

With celebrity chef Tyler Florence at the helm, plus a lively bar and open kitchen, Wayfare Tavern is a place to see and be seen. Business executives having power lunches and local celebrities can be spotted here regularly. Reservations are a must. Use the parking lots in the area to avoid the impossible street-parking situation, given it is the Financial District.

On the Side:

  • Go for broke and order a side of the deliciously mild and creamy Macaroni and Cheese with garlic breadcrumbs. Decadent, for sure.
  • If you're looking for a dish with simple elegance instead, try the California Avocado & Hearts of Palm.
