The Dish:

Remember when mom used to make you cookies after school? Yeah, me neither. That's why we're grown-ups now and can just get our own cookies whenever we want. Specialty's bakes cookies all day long so that your chocolate chunk cookie is fresh, if not warm, when you eat it. If you come at the right time, the cookies are still soft and toasty from the oven with melty chocolate chunks threatening to blemish your slacks and a taste so good, you will wonder exactly what you sacrificed karmically to have happened upon such good fortune. Whatever it is, it's worth it.

Key Ingredients: Flour, sugar, butter, eggs... probably something magical... and semi-sweet chocolate chunks

The Place:

Specialty's has six locations within the downtown area, all raring to go with fresh baked goods, breakfast, salads, sandwiches, and soups each morning. The Battery location is small and take-away only, with a sidewalk-facing glass-fronted counter that tantalizes passersby with muffins, scones, and cinnamon rolls in the mornings. The locations differ slightly—some have seating, for example—but generally share the same convivial home-baked atmosphere and casual, tasty menu.

Local Insider Tips:

Three words: Warm cookie radar. With the wonder that is the Internet, Specialty's takes the knowledge of freshly baked cookies from the hands of the bakers and distributes this information to anyone who may be interested. See their (awesome) website for a continually updated map of locations showing which type of cookie came out of the oven at what time at every store. Or subscribe to email alerts if you're a cookie maniac. Now if they could only transmit the smell of those cookies!
